(INTERVIEW) A Taste of Nostalgia: Pedro de Sambento’s Journey with Ocean Basket

In 1997, a vision was born in Cape Town—one that would forever change how South Africans enjoyed seafood. Pedro de Sambento, co-founder of Ocean Basket, dreamed of making seafood affordable and accessible to the masses, blending simplicity, value, and exceptional taste. Today, as Ocean Basket returns to its iconic Kloof Street roots, Pedro reflects on the journey, the challenges, and the dreams that continue to inspire.

The Spark That Lit the Ocean Basket Flame
“The inspiration came from wanting to make seafood accessible,” Pedro shares. In a city rich with food, wine, and tourism, Ocean Basket’s unique approach was clear—no-frills seafood served with warmth and authenticity. The goal? To provide value and invite everyone to share in the joy of a good meal.

Finding Home on Kloof Street
The original Kloof Street location was no accident. Pedro recalls exploring the area, immersing himself in its vibe, and discovering a heritage building that felt perfect. “It had everything—a beautiful courtyard, the potential for an indoor-outdoor feel, and a central location. I knew it was the right place.”

This setting became synonymous with Ocean Basket’s identity, with its courtyard serving as the heart of a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere. “Our team made people feel at home while serving superb seafood,” Pedro reflects.

The Birth of a Menu
Customer feedback played a pivotal role in shaping Ocean Basket’s iconic offerings. “Our ‘Specials Blackboard,’ carried to every table, was everything,” Pedro recalls. From these humble beginnings emerged the beloved combos and platters—now staples that have delighted diners for decades.

Kloof Street’s Challenges and a Bittersweet Goodbye
As Kloof Street evolved into a nightlife hub, attracting a younger, fast-paced crowd, challenges arose. Families found it harder to access the area, and parking issues grew. “We started losing the families who loved sitting down for a meal,” Pedro says. Eventually, the tough decision to close the location was made, but Pedro’s heart never left. “My ‘Heart se Punt,’ like my wife says about our daughters—I always knew I’d return.”

Coming Home: The Return to Kloof Street
Years later, Ocean Basket is back on Kloof Street, smaller but filled with the same heart and soul. The new location blends nostalgia with modern elements, offering breathtaking views of Table Mountain. “We’re evolving,” Pedro says. “New crockery, seasonal menus, and a renewed focus on core seafood products ensure we stay relevant while honoring our roots.”

Fostering Community and Growth
The original Kloof Street location was more than a restaurant—it was a springboard for careers. “Our original managers, Carlos and Corne, are still with us and are part of the Ocean Basket family,” Pedro shares. This sense of unity remains central to the brand’s ethos, fostering growth for staff and franchisees alike.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Ocean Basket
As Ocean Basket expands locally and internationally, Pedro stays focused on the people who make it all possible. “Our vision is to be the most loved seafood destination in the world, always staying true to our values.”

While nostalgia plays a role, Pedro emphasizes the importance of innovation. “If we get stuck in nostalgia, we can’t move forward. We balance honoring our past with staying relevant for the future.”

A Legacy of Connection
Ocean Basket’s return to Kloof Street is more than a reopening—it’s a homecoming. For Pedro, it’s a chance to reconnect with a community that embraced the brand from the start. “It means the world to me,” he says. “I want our customers to grow their love of seafood, right on their doorstep.”

With its rich history, vibrant present, and exciting future, Ocean Basket continues to bring people together—one seafood platter at a time.
