GIG GUIDE: Celebrate Summer at the Cape Town Resort Collections Event
Once again the Cape Town Resort Collections bring the best of South Africa’s summer fashion to the catwalk. Set to take place on December 10th at Zeitz Moccaa, the shows pay homage to South Africa’s idyllic seasons, and channel an inimitable cosmopolitan spirit of adventure.
Designers include Gavin Rajah, Maxhosa Africa, Thula Sindi, Craig Jacobs of Fundudzi, Matte Nolim, and Tabio Bacar of Mozambique. This year’s trans-seasonal collections are expected to be especially bright, vibrant and reflective of Cape Town’s optimistic and celebratory summer season.
“We are delighted to be able to give local and international clients a taste of some of the best resort wear available in South Africa,” says Gavin Rajah, event convenor. “The energy of Cape Town is already electric with one of the busiest seasons in many years, and we are excited to be able to present a fashion showcase that reflects this positive energy.”
Following the success of the 2021 Cape Town Resort Collections, designer pieces are available for immediate purchase off the runway, allowing guests to buy one-off pieces and engage with their favourite creatives.
Supported by Pick n Pay under their FutureWear initiative, in collaboration with Atelier Gavin Rajah, a further cornerstone of the Resort Collections is the spotlighting of a new guard of South African fashion talent.
Under the initiative Durban University of Technology graduate Sipho Mbuto and Cape Town’s Julia Buchanan will showcase their own ranges alongside renowned headliners Gavin Rajah and Thula Sindi.
Both Sipho and Julia are beneficiaries of the incubator founded by Rajah and the South African retailer with the vision of creating accessibility to designer fashion for ordinary consumers while contributing to the amelioration of emerging design talent.
Says Pick n Pay’s GM for Clothing, Hazel Pillay: “The project is built on a cornerstone of mentorship. We are consistently challenging the initiative to drive new ways to elevate its primary goal. Next year Julia Buchanan will play the role of a mentor to one of the new designers chosen. She has had great learnings and experience, having been a recipient of the program, and is best equipped to take a fellow designer on the journey.”
“The program is successfully creating mentors that will lead the transformation in the entrepreneurial design space in South African fashion,” she adds.
In addition to Pick n Pay, the Cape Town Resort Collections showcase is made possible by the support of sponsors including Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, Carver Media, Tsogo Sun and La Maison Des Arts. The show will take place at 18h30 on December 10th at Zeitz Moccaa, the V&A Waterfront Silo District.
