KELLOGG’S BREAKFASTS FOR BETTER DAYS CHALLENGE
To celebrate National breakfast month, Kellogg’s Breakfasts for Better Days™ initiative issued a challenge to media personalities and bloggers in South Africa to take part in the breakfast challenge. And we were also invited to take part in the challenge. As part of the challenge, we had to spend a day without breakfast and document our experience using our phones and tagging #KelloggsBFBDChallenge throughout the day.
I have to admit it was not an easy task to spend the day without breakfast, considering it is the most important meal of the day. Being in the PR and media industry my energy and creativity seemed to have skipped breakfast also. But I had to keep in mind that on a daily basis many young schoolers go to school without having breakfast and they are expected to participate in various school activities without a single meal in the morning.
The next day we were invited to join other bloggers and media at Duduza primary school located in the East rand just near Nigel- where we spent the day with the talented and energetic students. When we entered the school we were welcomed by the students performing some beautiful melodies or a remix of popular songs while incorporating Kellogg’s into their performance.
After the great performance we were teamed up into three teams, and we were escorted to the classrooms, where we spent more time with the students, distributing and having breakfast with them, and a few laughs were shared with students as we exchanged stories about their hobbies and where they want to be when they grow up (it brought back some good old memories of my own school years).
“Our Kellogg’s Breakfast Challenge allows a window into the harsh reality of what children who go without breakfast go through every day. Without starting the day with a balanced breakfast, children are fatigued, listless and often struggle to concentrate, which can impact on their performance in lessons. A hungry child cannot perform properly, whether in the classroom or on the sports field, and we believe that by creating a solution for this very prevalent and serious issue we can help more children in South Africa reach their potential.” said Vuyokazi Xapa, Corporate Communications Manager for Kellogg’s.
After that special moment we spent with the kids, we were given a guided tour of the school by the principal Mr. Nhlanhla Zulu. The tour included a view of the newly refurbished school laboratory and Library. The tour also included a brief history of Duduza Primary school, the students and how they source sponsorship to take care of the school and students.
After the tour, it was time for us to meet-up with the students for a game of soccer with fellow bloggers partaking in the game.
