A Cozy Culinary Escape at Tryn, Steenberg Estate
As the autumn chill settles over Cape Town, we trade sun-drenched beach days for cozy, intimate dining experiences. Fortunately, the city offers no shortage of exceptional restaurants perfect for indulgent meals during the colder months. One such hidden gem is Tryn, nestled within the picturesque Steenberg Estate—a lesser-known culinary haven compared to the renowned Bistro Sixteen82 on the same property.

Tryn is celebrated for its wholesome breakfasts, light yet satisfying lunches, and sumptuous dinners. On our visit, we opted for a two-course lunch experience, eager to immerse ourselves in the restaurant’s contemporary charm, bold and modern interiors, breathtaking vineyard views, and a relaxed yet refined atmosphere.
A Warm Welcome
Our meal began with a bread course, served with butter so rich and silky it melted effortlessly into the warm, freshly baked bread—a simple yet delightful prelude to what was to come.

Starters: A Tale of Contrasts
For starters, we selected the Pan-Fried Scallops with Creamy Cauliflower Purée. This dish was nothing short of perfection—crispy on the outside, tender and sweet within, complemented by the delicate freshness of warm orange butter. A must-try on the menu.

Next, we tried the Truffle-Infused Mushroom Ravioli with porcini velouté, shimeji mushrooms, and a parmesan crisp. While the truffle aroma was enticing, the dish leaned towards richness, and the addition of prawns didn’t quite enhance the overall experience. A good dish, though perhaps not the most exciting on the menu.
Mains: A Journey of Flavours
For mains, we chose the Ethically Sourced Fish, served with creamy fennel purée, fresh tender greens, a quinoa fritter, aubergine atchar, and a swirl of Cape Malay velouté. This dish told an intriguing flavour story, though some elements didn’t harmonise as seamlessly as expected. Nonetheless, the fish’s freshness was unmistakable, and the aubergine atchar added an unexpected yet welcome twist.
The Herb and Dijon Mustard-Crusted Lamb Rack was, without a doubt, the standout dish. Oven-roasted to perfection, sliced into cutlets, and served with creamy tahini aubergine, this dish was an absolute triumph. Each bite transported us on a culinary journey, with the coriander-infused Moroccan jus adding an exquisite depth of flavour. The portion was generous, making it an excellent choice for those with a hearty appetite.

Sustainability at the Forefront
During our visit, we had the pleasure of chatting with Lius, a senior manager at Steenberg, who shared insights into the estate’s impressive sustainability initiatives, particularly regarding ethical sourcing in their restaurants. His knowledge, warmth, and charisma added an enriching dimension to our experience.
Beyond the Plate
Beyond its dining experiences, Steenberg Estate offers a wealth of luxury, including the 5-star Steenberg Hotel & Spa, where 24 elegantly appointed rooms embody the essence of understated luxury—a perfect retreat for those seeking a refined getaway.
From impeccable service to a serene and inviting ambiance, Tryn seamlessly blends elegance with comfort. Even as the rain gently fell outside, the cozy warmth of the restaurant provided a perfect refuge. While some dishes could benefit from further refinement, the overall experience was delightful and memorable—an absolute must-visit for those seeking an intimate yet elevated dining escape this season.
