The iPhone Gets Serious: Meet the 18 Pro and Apple’s First Foldable

By Gavinko G Khosa

Apple has officially entered a new era. At its September event, the tech giant unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and, in the biggest surprise of the night, iPhone Duo — Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone. The event also marked the first major Apple keynote led by John Ternus, who became CEO on 1 September, succeeding Tim Cook.

Meet the iPhone 18 Pro

The new Pro models arrive in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with a more refined finish.

At the heart of the devices is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, with a six-core CPU up to 20% faster and a redesigned GPU offering up to 40% more performance. The chip also brings stronger on-device AI capabilities, making the iPhone even more powerful for gaming, editing, multitasking and intelligent features.

The camera system gets a serious upgrade too, with a 48MP Fusion main camera featuring variable aperture, alongside enhanced Pro controls and improved video and audio capabilities. Apple has also made the Dynamic Island smaller, giving the display more room, while the Pro Max gets what Apple describes as its biggest battery-life improvement yet.

Then came the foldable

The real headline was iPhone Duo. Apple’s first foldable features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, opening into a larger canvas that feels closer to a mini tablet.

Powered by the A20 Pro chip and featuring a new hinge and vapour-chamber cooling system, Duo is designed for everything from multitasking and gaming to entertainment and content creation.

It’s a major move into a category already occupied by Samsung, Google, Huawei and Honor — and potentially Apple’s biggest shift in iPhone design since its launch.

And the price?

The iPhone Duo starts at around US$1,999, putting it firmly in premium territory.

For South African Apple fans, however, there’s still a wait. Local pricing, availability and release dates are yet to be confirmed for South Africa.

But there’s more

The iPhone may have stolen the show, but Apple also unveiled significant updates across its wearables, audio products and accessories. And that deserves its own conversation.

Apple’s accessories have evolved beyond simple add-ons, sitting at the intersection of technology, fashion, fitness and personalisation. Next up, The Guide Online takes a closer look at Apple’s groundbreaking accessories announcements — and what they mean for consumers. The iPhone 18 Pro is a powerful evolution of Apple’s flagship. But the iPhone Duo is the real game changer.Apple isn’t just asking how to make the iPhone better. It’s asking what the iPhone can become next.

  • AI agents integration can reduce repetitive work across multiple business systems. I would be interested in learning more about the security and API requirements involved.
