Naritive joins Google for Startups Scale Tier
South African-born adtech firm joins Google for Startups Scale Tier, validating its AI-powered infrastructure that replaces digital ad waste with measurable, human-led attention
The global digital advertising industry is grappling with declining effectiveness, wasted media spend, and shrinking consumer attention. Amid growing concerns around so-called “digital pollution” — ads that are ignored, skipped, or resented — Naritive, the South African-born adtech company, is redefining South Africa’s attention engine.
Naritive has secured a place in the Google for Startups Scale Tier, the highest level of support reserved for high-growth, AI-driven companies. The invitation-only tier follows a rigorous technical audit and serves as an endorsement of Naritive’s infrastructure, scalability, and AI roadmap.

A technical endorsement at the highest level
Scale Tier status unlocks up to $350,000 (approximately R6 million) in infrastructure and AI support, enabling Naritive to migrate its architecture to a fully cloud-native, serverless environment powered by Google Cloud.
By leveraging the same private fibre backbone that supports global platforms such as YouTube and Search, Naritive will deliver its immersive ad format, “Ad Stories,” with sub-millisecond latency across international markets.
“This is fuel injection for our mission and our purpose,” says Nicolas van Zyl, CEO of Naritive Global. “Google looking under our hood and endorsing our roadmap confirms that our ‘technical steel’ is ready for the global stage. We’ve built the engine to replace digital pollution with human-led storytelling, and we now have the world’s most powerful infrastructure and the team capable of proving it.”
AI as a precision engine for attention
While many companies are experimenting with AI, Naritive is applying advanced models such as Vertex AI and Gemini Pro to optimise for real-time attention performance, not just impressions.
Using independent eye-tracking from Lumen Research, Naritive shows its advertising formats outperform traditional display ads, capturing twice as much attention and driving 63% stronger brand recall, demonstrating the effectiveness of its approach in engaging audiences and reinforcing brand memory.
The shift signals a move away from volume-based metrics toward independently verified attention and measurable business outcomes.
Building global ad infrastructure from Africa
Naritive’s Scale Tier recognition reinforces a broader industry narrative: Africa is not simply an emerging market for technology consumption but is increasingly a source of robust, exportable digital infrastructure.
“For two decades, we’ve focused on building native architecture while others built walled gardens,” comments Rafiq Phillips, CTO at Naritive. “Accessing Scale Tier infrastructure means we can operate on the same backbone that powers Google’s own products. It proves that an African-founded adtech company can compete globally on engineering strength.”
