Raise Your Glass: Durbanville Wine Valley’s Taste of Terroir Returns with a Historic First

The countdown has officially begun for Taste of Terroir, Durbanville Wine Valley’s premier annual red wine showcase — and this year’s edition promises to be the most exclusive and memorable yet. Set for Friday, 8 August 2025, the much-anticipated affair at Loch Lynne Wine Estate will unveil a region-first release, certain to make this evening a standout on South Africa’s wine calendar.

Taste of Terroir is renowned for its curated celebration of exceptional wines — with a particular spotlight on red vintages that reflect the cool-climate excellence of the Durbanville terroir. This year’s tasting features an illustrious lineup of acclaimed producers, including Nitida, Meerendal, Maastricht, Mellish Family Vineyards, Klein Roosboom, Groot Phesantekraal, Durbanville Hills, D’Aria, De Grendel, and Diemersdal.

While Durbanville has long been celebrated for its crisp and expressive Sauvignon Blancs, its red wines are increasingly commanding global attention. Recent accolades bear testament:

  • Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2023 claimed the International Judges’ Trophy
  • Diemersdal Private Collection 2018 scored 95 points at the Trophy Wine Show
  • De Grendel Op die Berg Syrah and Groot Phesantekraal Syrah received 95 and 94 points respectively in the Winemag 2025 Shiraz Report
  • And at Decanter 2025, Gold medals were awarded to De Grendel Rubaiyat and Op Die Berg Chardonnay, alongside Durbanville Hills’ Collectors Reserve The Promenade Pinotage and The Tangram White

With red wine season in full swing, Taste of Terroir offers an intimate winter evening of award-winning pours, storytelling, and seasonal culinary pairings.

Most notably, the event will mark the debut of Durbanville Wine Valley’s first-ever limited-release Pinotage — a collaborative creation from all the producers in the region. This special wine commemorates three major milestones:

  • 200 years of the Durbanville community
  • 100 years since Pinotage was first cultivated — a grape proudly South African in origin
  • And the centenary of Afrikaans as an official language

“More than a meeting of diverse know-how, we’re proud to present this Pinotage as a blend of generational wisdom, ancient geophysical magic, and cultural richness,” says Durbanville Wine Valley Manager, Natasha de Villiers. “This year’s Taste of Terroir is truly one for the books.”
