A Sauvignon Blanc Celebration at Tryn Restaurant, Steenberg Wine Estate
We recently returned to Tryn Restaurant at Steenberg Wine Estate—a familiar favourite, but this time for something a little different. With May marking Sauvignon Blanc Month, it felt only fitting to celebrate at one of the country’s top producers of this beloved varietal.
In case you missed the memo, Sauvignon Blanc Month is dedicated to the crisp, aromatic white wine grape that thrives in South African soil—especially in the cool-climate vineyards surrounding Cape Town. Steenberg, with its rich winemaking heritage, offers a curated food and wine pairing experience in honour of the month, and we went along to see (and sip) for ourselves.


Starter: Masala-Dusted Calamari with Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2024
The calamari promised bold flavour, but the masala fell a little flat, and the peppery rocket overwhelmed the dish. Fortunately, the Sauvignon Blanc lifted the palate with its zesty brightness. Rating: 5/10


Second Course: Steak Tartare (and Fish Tartare option) with Steenberg Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc
The classic steak tartare was executed well, with melba crisps and a quail egg to round it out. However, the standout here was the fish tartare—delicate, vibrant, and perfectly complemented by the tropical fruit notes and creamy texture of the wine. Rating: 7/10


Main Course: Veal Escalope with The Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2024
This was the most comforting plate of the day. The veal was tender and generously portioned, paired with a glass of The Black Swan—a complex, elegant Sauvignon Blanc with white peach, lemongrass, and citrus blossom. A beautifully balanced dish. Rating: 8/10


Dessert: Lime Crémeux with Steenberg Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc 2023
A playful finish to the experience, the lime crémeux was bright and textural, featuring macerated berries, spicy raspberry sorbet and yuzu gel. At times, the flavours competed for attention, but the dish was visually striking and the sparkling wine provided a refreshing close. Rating: 6.5/10
