(REVIEW) Ocean Basket Returns to Kloof Street: A Fresh Take on a Classic Favorite

For Cape Town’s seafood lovers, Ocean Basket’s return to Kloof Street is more than just another restaurant opening—it’s a homecoming. As one of the chain’s original locations, this relaunch carries a sense of nostalgia, but with a menu that reflects a more refined, modern approach to seafood.

Naturally, we had to stop by and see how Ocean Basket has evolved, and while much of the familiar comfort remains, there are some notable updates.

A Familiar Experience with a Fresh Perspective

The restaurant retains its laid-back charm, with a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages lingering over shared plates of seafood. The menu, however, has been subtly reworked, offering a mix of classic staples and new additions that hint at a more elevated approach to casual dining.

We began with a selection of starters, and while the deep-fried olives were the unexpected standout—crispy, briny, and addictive—the service was noticeably slow in getting them to the table. Once they arrived, however, they did not disappoint. The deep-fried sushi and seared salmon sashimi also delivered on freshness and presentation, offering a satisfying introduction to the meal.

For the main course, the whole sea bass with salsa was a clear highlight—delicately cooked, flaky, and well-balanced in flavor. But of course, no visit to Ocean Basket would be complete without the iconic seafood platter, a generously portioned feast of prawns, calamari, and grilled fish, still as dependable as ever.

Then came dessert, a category where Ocean Basket has stepped up its game. The cheesecake baklava, a fusion of creamy and crisp textures, offered a surprising but successful twist on tradition. Meanwhile, the chocolate lava cake with ice cream delivered exactly what one hopes for—rich, warm, and indulgent, a perfect conclusion to the meal.
