(REVIEW) A Hidden Gem in Wynberg: Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa

Never have we been so excited to write about a hidden gem that people need to know about. We recently paid a visit to the lovely, luxurious Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa, shockingly located in upper Wynberg, Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. Just like us, that was our first thought because when you think of Wynberg, luxury isn’t the first word you’d associate with it. Little did we know, there was a beautiful oasis called the Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa, a wonderlust in Cape Town’s hospitality scene.

Once you enter the beautiful, wide gates, paradise awaits in the form of a stunning manor that screams wealth, tranquility, and luxury. Upon our entry, we were welcomed by one of the butlers carrying an umbrella as it was a rainy day. We were ushered to the reception where warm smiles and enthusiasm from the staff members awaited us, a class only matched in high-end luxury hotels. A beautiful welcome. As we entered and were ushered to our rooms, we went through the beautiful wooden staircases that felt like we were back in an 80s TV series like Dallas, oozing luxury and wealth with a taste of history. This was a wonderful touch that the owners kept to bring back nostalgia to the venue.

We were booked in one of the deluxe rooms. As we entered, we were blown away by the luxury and modern touches that filled the room to create a luxurious, comfortable experience with a bed and views overlooking the beautiful neighborhood, and a bathroom big enough to be equipped with a shower and a stunning bathtub.

We made our way downstairs to take a stroll and explore the property. The property houses two magnificent restaurants, the Palm Terrace and De Tafel, serving inspired seasonal and sustainability-focused cuisine from admired and talented chef Gregory Henderson. We got to enjoy our intimate dinner at De Tafel, where Chef Gregory took us on a culinary journey fused with a sustainability approach. The meals were carefully curated to ensure sustainability and were delicious, with his own take on some classics and new dishes, telling a story of South Africa’s rich food history. A must-try! (We will be interviewing Chef Gregory soon to go much more in-depth into his approach to cooking.)

Dinner was one of the highlights of the evening as we indulged in a six-course meal paired with carefully curated wines by their talented sommelier. The sommelier perfectly complemented the dishes with amazing local wines, showcasing the country’s diversity.

The dinner was a perfect fusion of delicious cuisine, engaging storytelling from Gregory, and impeccable service. Gregory joined us at our table to personally guide us through each dish, sharing the inspiration behind them. The team’s world-class service made the experience even more memorable.

Our highlight was undoubtedly the duck breast and the Silverfish with seaweed candy. Both dishes were culinary masterpieces, visually stunning and bursting with flavor. The careful pairing of wines further elevated the experience, making it a must-add to any culinary enthusiast’s Cape Town itinerary.

We woke up in the morning and made our way to breakfast, also prepared by Chef Gregory and his team. For our breakfast, Chef Gregory came to say hello and could see that we had a hectic night, so he whipped up a fabulous Bloody Mary that did the trick of getting us up. For breakfast, we opted for the Farm style breakfast and an egg omelet. Gregory prepared one of the most fabulous and beautiful omelets that was sheer perfection and picturesque, a chef who understands the concept that food needs to taste as well as look good in the sharing era. Honestly, the best hotel breakfast we have ever had, definitely a brunch spot you need to check out for an elevated breakfast experience. No buffet style here, just a delicious, freshly made breakfast to kickstart your day.

After breakfast, we made our way to Acai Spa and Wellness Oasis, which celebrates the beauty of wellness through bespoke treatments carefully created by an internationally qualified therapist. Pure and premium natural products from leading holistic wellness brand, Healing Earth, are used in the memorable treatments that nurture both the body and soul by harnessing the restorative powers of Africa’s rich natural resources, such as minerals, flowers, herbs, or natural oils. This was much needed just to restart and relax. The experience was wonderful.

For anyone looking for a perfect place to stay that is not around the city but the perfect gateway from the hustle and bustle of city life, no doubt Palm House Boutique Hotel & Spa is the destination of choice. The team were amazing and professional throughout, the food world-class. It was an experience we can’t fault, beside the rain because we didn’t get an opportunity to indulge in the pool.
