Foodie Favorite Returns: Chefs Warehouse & Canteen Reopens on Bree Street

A Cape Town Icon Gets a Grown-Up Refresh

Get ready for a trip down memory lane with a modern twist! Chefs Warehouse & Canteen, the restaurant that ignited Cape Town’s love affair with “Tapas for Two,” is back on Bree Street.

More Than Nostalgia

Led by the original dream team of Liam and Jan Tomlin, alongside their partner David Schneider, this new iteration isn’t just a revival. It’s a homecoming with more space, more art, and more ways to indulge your foodie passions.

“It’s nostalgic, but better,” says Liam. The beloved dishes – pea risotto, bone marrow, lemon posset – are all here, but now they share the stage with exciting new creations. And while the original’s communal spirit is alive and well, there’s also a variety of seating options for a more personalized experience.

Feast for the Senses

Step into the new space and be greeted by a symphony of textures – exposed brick, steel, and black tiling complement Paul du Toit’s captivating artwork. The centerpiece? A dramatic double-volume chandelier featuring playful ceramic sculptures by Cape Town’s Ceramic Matters. It’s a testament to the team’s deep respect for the culinary arts and old-world traditions.

Sharing is Caring

The heart of Chefs Warehouse & Canteen remains the same – sharing plates and conversation. Choose from a four-course Tapas for Two menu (R800 per person) or order individual plates à la carte. Expect a mix of old favorites and frequently changing seasonal surprises, keeping the menu dynamic and exciting.

More Than Meets the Eye

Chefs Warehouse & Canteen is just the first course in this three-story culinary destination. Head upstairs to discover Merchant Bar & Grill (opening August 13th) – an ode to local producers with a focus on house-made charcuterie and an extensive cheese selection. And for private events, Room 91 offers a multi-level indoor-outdoor space perfect for any occasion.

A Legacy Continues

Chefs Warehouse & Canteen is more than just a restaurant; it’s a culmination of passion, experience, and a love for good food. With Liam, Jan, David, and Head Chef Adrian Hadlow at the helm, this Bree Street icon is poised to write a whole new chapter in its story.

Ready to experience the best of past, present, and future? Chefs Warehouse & Canteen opens its doors on Wednesday, August 7th for lunch service.
