DMRE PARTNERS WITH CEF TO LAUNCH #BEFUELSAVVY EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) along with the Central Energy Fund (CEF) have launched an educational campaign to create awareness about the significance of living a fuel-efficient lifestyle to mitigate the economic impact of fuel hikes on South African households.
The #BeFuelSavvy campaign seeks to encourage South Africans to apply fuel-efficient methods that will help them navigate the uncertainty brought about by the recent fuel hikes. The campaign aims to break down the cause and effect of fuel hikes as well as how the increase in fuel prices affects the cost of living for SA households.
The #BeFuelSavvy campaign will educate consumers about the importance of being energy-wise not only as motorists but also to households, as it relates to the use of other energy sources like paraffin and gas. The public will be at the centre of the educational campaign with activations carried out across the country.
It is a well-known fact that global economic factors and the depreciation of the South African Rand has pushed fuel prices higher in 2022, resulting in a significant economic impact on households. In response to these unbearable increases, government through the DMRE and National Treasury, has implemented measures to provide short-term relief to consumers by reducing the fuel levies by R1,50 per litre for both petrol and diesel. This temporary relief was phased out on 03 August 2022.
The inevitable fuel hikes have had a significant impact on South African households and many South Africans are not clear about what is driving the fuel increases.
Through this campaign, the Basic Fuel Price (BFP) which is used as a formula to determine the price of fuel movements, will be demystified for all consumers of fuel to understand. Simply put, BFP is a cost a South African importer of petroleum products pays to buy petroleum products from an international refinery. These costs include transportation of the products (i.e., petrol or diesel) and insurance to cover losses at sea or land, once the products are in transit to SA or arrive on SA shores.
The campaign will also seek to create awareness and understanding around the impact of fuel hikes as well as how South Africans can play their role in mitigating the effects of fuel prices.
