Winchester Mansion restuarant review

By Joann-Prinsloo

Winchestor Mansions, situated in Sea Point, an area known for its endless scenic views of the ocean, cosmopolitan culture and also a perfect setting to offer tranquillity and relaxation as a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Upon arrival to the Mansions, one is immediately taken aback by the grand Cape Dutch style architecture of the building, the exotic palm trees inhabiting the premises and the cooling breeze off the ocean, only a stone throw away from the door of the mansions itself. As one enters Winchester Mansions you are greeted by a warm and friendly staff, which is complimented by an even warmer atmosphere.

The bar/lounge area, furnished with white leather chairs and wooden touches is a perfectly created space to unwind after a long day over a glass of wine or divine cocktails. The bar/lounge area serves as both the waiting room before heading to dinner as well as a place of socialising where one can order a meal and drinks while marvelling over the beauty of the ocean or Cape Town’s glorious sunset.

The main restaurant section is a simplistic furnished area surrounded by beautiful pieces of mirror around the room. The dim lighting and soft music in the background pay as a contribute to the warm and pleasant ambiance of the room.

The newly introduced menu offers quite a variety of dishes, which can cater to any crowd or any person. Amongst the starters served were steamed mussels, garlic & ricotta risotto balls, accompanied by a wild mushroom & artichoke and the soup of the day to mention a few. The main meals consisted of a seafood platter, slow roast pork belly and a delicious herb-crusted loin of springbok which was my number one choice.

The meals were dishes fit for a King and Queen and left everyone with broad smiles and full tummies. For dessert, the table chose two plates of assorted sweet eateries. The white wine on the table complimented every meal perfectly! The chef clearly knew what he was doing!

The all-round service of the Harveys was magnificent. Staff greeted with smiles and the waiter attending to our table had great knowledge of the menu, could give us recommendations on what to choose and most importantly, always saw to it that our glass of wine was always refilled. To top it all off the chef, Jochen Riedel, made an appearance at the end of the night to hear if we enjoyed  what he had prepared and of course to take a selfie.

The menu itself was not too overwhelming with overly fancy words, so it was easy to make a decision.

The overall experience of Winchester Mansions was a very pleasant one and highly recommendable. Next time I will be sure to spend the night in one of their luxurious guest rooms and attend their Jazz  brunch held on Sundays.
