PMI’s Technovation 2024: Innovation, Technology, and the Road to a Smoke-Free Future
Philip Morris International (PMI) made a bold statement at its 10th annual Technovation 2024 event in Abu Dhabi, blending vision with innovation. This year’s gathering wasn’t just a product showcase—it was a declaration of PMI’s unwavering commitment to spearheading the shift towards a smoke-free future. As the company invests heavily in technology-driven alternatives to traditional smoking, the question arises: Can PMI truly deliver on its ambitious promises, or is this merely a marketing play in response to shifting consumer preferences?
Redefining Smoking: PMI’s Vision for the Future
Once synonymous with cigarettes, PMI is on a transformative journey to reshape its business model. The company is phasing out combustible cigarettes in favour of smoke-free alternatives. PMI’s vision for 2030 is audacious: to have 50% of its revenue derived from products that eliminate the inherent risks of smoking. As of Q3 2024, these smoke-free products account for 38% of PMI’s total net revenue. While this is an impressive figure, the question remains: Is this target sustainable?

To drive this transformation, PMI has invested an astonishing $12.5 billion into research and development since 2008. However, one must ask—will these investments lead to genuine public health improvements, or is PMI simply responding to a market under growing scrutiny, where consumer demands are evolving?
Technological Innovation: The Core of PMI’s Strategy
At Technovation, PMI unveiled its latest advances in smoke-free technology. Among the new products revealed were the IQOS ILUMA I, BONDS by IQOS, and VEEV ONE—each designed to replace combustion with advanced heating systems, claiming to reduce harmful chemicals by up to 95%. These devices underscore PMI’s strategy of integrating cutting-edge technology into its product lineup, offering consumers what they deem a “better” alternative to traditional smoking.

In an unexpected partnership, the legendary DJ Steve Aoki collaborated with PMI to launch limited-edition IQOS devices, featuring vibrant colours and glow-in-the-dark logos, blending cultural relevance with technological innovation.

PMI’s portfolio, which includes the flagship IQOS, e-vapor product VEEV, and smokeless nicotine pouch ZYN, is rooted in scientific research. While PMI insists that these products are not risk-free, they emphasise that they offer a significantly superior alternative for adults compared to smoking.
Yet, as with all emerging technologies, scepticism remains. Public health experts continue to raise concerns about the long-term safety of these alternatives, arguing that while they may reduce harm in the short term, further studies are needed to gauge their long-term impact on public health.
Global Collaboration: The Role of Policymakers and Regulators
A key element of PMI’s strategy is collaboration. Technovation 2024 highlighted the importance of aligning with policymakers and regulators to drive the global shift towards smoke-free alternatives. PMI is actively lobbying for stricter regulations within the tobacco industry, urging governments worldwide to support the transition away from combustible cigarettes.
Countries like Sweden, where smoking rates have dramatically dropped to just 5%, are held up as examples of what can be achieved through widespread adoption of smoke-free alternatives. PMI believes that these products can become mainstream globally, provided education and regulatory frameworks evolve to facilitate this transition.
However, the road ahead is far from straightforward. PMI faces the monumental task of overcoming decades of anti-smoking campaigns and shifting public perceptions about smoke-free alternatives. As the company works to boost adoption, education will be key.
The Future of Smoking?
Technovation 2024 demonstrated that PMI is not resting on its laurels. The company is making significant investments in the future of smoke-free alternatives, committing to technology, research, and global collaboration. However, whether PMI can realise its vision of a smoke-free future remains to be seen. Will these innovations inspire a global shift in smoking habits, or will they simply carve out a new niche for PMI in an evolving market?
One thing is certain: PMI is positioning itself as a leader in this new wave of tobacco industry transformation. Whether the company succeeds in its ambitious mission will largely depend on its ability to educate consumers, influence policymakers, and work collaboratively with health organisations. The journey ahead is long, but for PMI, the future is undeniably smoke-free.
