Over 45 000 fans made their way through the gates of the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit & International Convention Centre on the weekend of 14-16 September. Comic Con Africa sold out before the gates opened to the public which is unprecedented in the SA eventing industry. This Comic Con was the first time globally that had such a strong esports affiliation which was driven through the partnership with Telkom’s VS Gaming and the Master’s finals.
Carol Weaving, Managing Director of Reed Exhibitions Africa, says: “Africa’s inaugural Comic Con has wrapped up and it exceeded even our wildest expectations. The three-day gathering of gamers, cosplayers, pop culture fanatics and comic book enthusiasts has ignited a magical fire on the African continent. This event would not have been possible without our incredible partner, VS Gaming, all the exhibitors and of course, the fans. It was you that made this such a huge hit and we are grateful for your support.”
The event saw appearances by international celebrities Ricky Whittle (American Gods, The 100), Yetide Badaki (American Gods), Travis Fimmel (Vikings, Warcraft), Kevin Sussman (Big Bang Theory) and Demore Barnes (12 Monkeys, American Gods). There was also a range of successful panel discussions and Q&As with artists, guests and cosplayers. The panels covered matters such as the film industry, representation and the future of film and television, especially with the growing popularity of science fiction, comedy and fantasy television series.
Comic book fans got the opportunity to engage with local and international artists and writers; including the likes of South Africa’s Team Kwezi (Loyiso Mkhize, Mohale Mashigo and Clyde Beech), international writers Andy Diggle & Chris Sprouse as well as artists like Jenny Frison, Riccardo Federicci, Sean Izaakse, Jason Masters, Warren Louw, Moray Rhoda and Bill Masuku.
“Based on this success we are very proud and excited to announce that we will be bringing Comic Con Africa back to Johannesburg in 2019!” Weaving further stated.
Comic Con Africa has promised that they will take the learnings from this year and make 2019’s edition bigger and better.
See you at Comic Con Africa 2019!
