Nike has celebrated Black Heritage Month (BHM) with distinct designs of products, including shoes, apparel and accessories since 2005. This year, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the AF1, Nike has created an exclusive, world-first BHM design which merges the iconic AF1 innovation with the rich cultural heritage of South Africa.
Although BHM is typically observed in February, we celebrate great African achievements throughout the year, and even more so during Heritage Month in South Africa. Inspired by the original BHM programme and the revolutionary Nike AF1, Nike South Africa has recognized and honoured 35 iconic South Africans which it believes are changing the game and influencing the country’s future, collectively known as The Force 35.
Marked by an intimate dinner ceremony held at the Oppenheimer Park basketball court, The Force 35 was celebrated for their efforts to excel in their respective crafts and for the impact they have had in their communities and the country at large.
For the last course, the inspirational Forces were “served” with their personalized pairs of the AF1 BHM exclusive edition as recognition of their icon status. Those being honoured included the likes of Black Coffee, Scoop Makhathini, Anele Mdoda along with many others.
