It’s always great when new talent emerges in Mzansi’s music scene. Today we’re crushing on the musical duo that is Usual Suspects consisting of Inno Makhanya and  Ashley, currently signed with THOHO Records, the group released their debut single earlier this year titled O’nkgatlhile which has been blazing up the airwaves.


The duo has showcased its versatility not only by the covers they’ve performed but through fusing different genres and blending into a unique African sound. Get to know a bit more about the group and download their hot single available on iTunes.


Innocent hails from Sebokeng in Gauteng, South Africa and began singing in his school choir at the age of 11. Later he moved to join the Sedibeng Gospel Choir, before joining a number of musical acts as both singer and drummer. In 2001 he joined the world renowned Umoja Traditional Dance Group, which gave him vast experience and allowed him to travel extensively, learning varieties of music and dance from around the world. With the assistance of DJ Sceptic with whom he had worked for some time, he submitted a demo to Thoho Records, who immediately recognized his unique talent and brought him in. He considers the opportunity to work with the Usual Suspects family a dream come true. Innocent’s vocal range, dazzling dance moves and infectious stage presence are a real delight and he is looking forward to letting the world know.



Ashley is a music producer/ songwriter/ vocalist and rapper who was born and raised in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. He started rapping in high school when a classmate encouraged him to try writing his own lyrics. From then on, he never looked back and chased his dream of becoming one of the best Motswako lyricists. Ash gets his inspiration from his experiences growing up in the township, as well as from current affairs and day-to-day challenges. He is most certainly here to break down barriers in rap music, and his incarnation as a Usual Suspect is about exactly that. Says Ash, ‘I always think of myself on the Motswako scene as a drop of red paint on a perfectly white wedding dress. You will most definitely spot me. Like it or not.’
