Who is Thabisa Ngobese and where does she come from?
To be honest I’m still trying to figure myself out, at the same time I could go on and on. I’m a lover of all things books, a lover of wine, food, people, laughter, music. I’m reserved, yet loud around those I’m closest too. I’m a Durbanite from Kwamashu, a Journalism graduate from the Durban Universtiy of Technology, an older sister to my siblings, a daughter to Sibongile and Bongani, an author, an aspiring businesswoman. You see why I hate this question. I find it hard to define myself.
How did Thabisa Ngobese discover her passion and what avenue did you take to nourish your talent?
I’ve always known that writing was my thing, it was in the way I enjoyed writing my English high school essays. I saw it how I loved to read day in and day out. It was in my decision to study journalism and as I grew I realised I could do something about it. I think the only way you can nourish this kind of talent is to read vigorously, to find a mentor who is willing to guide you in the right direction and so that is what I did.
Which fellow author do you look up to and why?
I don’t look up to anyone in specific, everyone has something to add in one way or another. There are just way too many talented individuals out there to pick only one.
Besides writing what are you passionate about?
I stick to what I am good at and that’s writing, yes I have other things that I enjoy but I wouldn’t call them a passion. I don’t think watching movies would count as a passion, would it?
What quote/Motto best speaks to you?
Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt and dance like no one is watching.
To those who don’t know your book can you give us a brief synosis of what it is about?
Simply put Makaziwe’s Forbidden Love is about love conquering all obstacles thrown at it. It’s a love story about a girl who falls in love with a man her tradition family would never accept. She goes against everything and everyone and together they try and to make it work even though there are so many things set to see their love fail. The book is about acceptance and forgiveness.
Is the storyline in anyway a reflection of your own life?
The concept around it stems from issues I have seen get in the way of love, things that people I know have somewhat gone through, but no it’s not something I have experienced personally.
Do you have any other projects in the pipe line?
I am currently working on my second book which doesn’t have a title yet. I leave that to the last minute. A few chapters are available online and fingers crossed that I’ll be done by the end of December.
