(RESTAURANT REVIEW) RIKŪ: A Culinary Journey Infused with Flavor, Music, and Soul
There’s a culinary gem tucked away in the vibrant heart of Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill, and it goes by the name RIKŪ. More than just a restaurant, it’s a gastronomic journey curated by the talented Chef Rikku O’Donnchu, whose impressive culinary resume includes stints at renowned establishments globally.
Chef Rikku’s culinary prowess has graced prestigious kitchens such as GÅTE Stellenbosch, 5 Diamond Amorette in Pennsylvania, and Michelin Star restaurants in the US and the UK. With such a pedigree, our expectations were high as we ventured into the limited-seating haven of Riku’s kitchen.
The experience kicked off with a set menu, skillfully paired with cocktails by the acclaimed bar chef, AJ Durow. Limited to 12 guests per sitting, RIKŪ ensures an intimate and interactive affair, where dishes and cocktails are prepared right before you, emphasizing minimal waste and local sourcing.

Now, let’s delve into the culinary adventure that unfolded. The starters offered a trio of Edamame, Kelp, and Perilla, presented with a creative flair that left us in awe. The Edamame stole the spotlight, a harmonious blend of freshness and pastry crunch paired with a cocktail that elevated the experience.
The Langoustine-Melon-Kelp Oil dish followed suit, showcasing the expertly prepared Hamachi with fermented chili and black garlic. A refreshing squid with capsicum and black mole delighted the taste buds, while the aged Drake with truffle cherry proved to be a symphony of flavors and visual delight.

A yogurt berry palate cleanser brought a theatrical touch to the proceedings, complete with lights, horror music, and an artful skull presentation. The dessert finale was spectacular, featuring coffee dark chocolate, and banana miso caviar.

Beyond the delectable fare, the overall experience at RIKŪ was unparalleled. The service was exceptional, and the team’s passion evident in every dish. The anticipation of this restaurant earning accolades at the upcoming Eat Out Awards is palpable, and rightfully so. RIKŪ offers a unique culinary narrative that deserves to be celebrated in the vibrant Cape Town food scene. Don’t miss the chance to embark on this extraordinary gastronomic voyage.
