Edgars CommUnity Competition calls on kids to showcase their creativity in shopfront windows!
What else is there to say for a 94-year-old organisation that has been entwined in the very fabric of South African society? For retail giant Edgars, it’s “thank you”. Thank you to all the moms, dads, grannies, gogos, granddads, oupas, and every South African who has supported the brand all these years.
In recognising its loyal customer base across South Africa, Edgars this week launched the Edgars CommUnity Competition in every town where it has a store. A share of three million rands will be given away during the period, making it possible for every community where Edgars has a store to have a winning child and a winning school.
“This is about celebrating the people and communities who have been with us through the decades. We want to say, ‘thank you’ to them by giving something back to the local schools and the children in all the communities we serve,” says Norman Drieselmann, CEO of Retailability, the retail expert group operation that bought and owns Edgars.
Children win, schools win Drieselmann adds, “Customers are what make the Edgars brand, and this special campaign invites everyone who is part of the Edgars story to stand a chance to win their share for themselves and their school. “
”We’re going to tell a collective story of our customers as part of Edgars by inviting children of school-going age to create a portrait of themselves and enter the Edgars CommUnity Competition. They can enter digitally but if they bring their artwork into their local Edgars store, they have more chances of winning. Additionally, their artwork will be placed on display in our store windows. We want our stores to become living acknowledgements of our shoppers,” he adds. “Your child could win a R5,000 cash prize and R20,000 for his or her school!”
How to enter
The public can look out for entry forms at selected schools where School Yard operates, in their local community newspapers, as well as in Edgars stores.
Step 1: Grab your crayons, pencils or paints and create a self-portrait.
Step 2: Scan the QR code in the newspaper and upload a photo of your artwork.
Step 3: You will receive a unique code with every successful entry. Use this code to play the Edgars CommUnity Spin & Win online game and stand a chance to win a share of R500,000 in instant prizes.
Step 4: In order to get more entries for the Grand Prize, you can bring your physical artwork into your local Edgars store, and it will be displayed in the windows. This gives you and your school five more competition entries.
The competition ends on 25 August 2023.
Edgars: Here yesterday, today and tomorrow
“We see our customers as family and we want to celebrate with them through every moment, big or small. Since the establishment of the first Edgars store in September 1929 on Joubert Street in Johannesburg, we knew that we had a part to play in the lives of amazing South Africans who push through all the challenges that come their way,” says Drieselmann.
“As a brand, we exist because of them and for 94 years, we’ve been grateful for the small role we play in making memories and celebrating every occasion. We’re here, stronger than ever and we can’t wait to give back and turn our windows into artwork showcases for our communities, by our communities,” he adds.
